Nusantaranews.net, Payakumbuh - The long-standing horse racing tradition of Luak Limopuluah will once again take center stage. On Sunday, September 28, 2025, the Kubu Gadang–Tiakar racecourse in Payakumbuh Utara and Payakumbuh Timur will host the Indonesia Horse Racing Cup II 2025.
This one-day championship will feature a total prize pool of Rp425 million (approx. USD 27,000), fully funded by the main sponsor, Sarga.co. No funding comes from the regional budget (APBD) or from Pordasi (the Indonesian Equestrian Federation) at either the Payakumbuh or West Sumatra levels.
Chairman of the organizing committee and also the Daily Chairman of Pordasi Payakumbuh, Mardion Fernandes, emphasized that this event showcases how traditional horse racing can be organized professionally and independently.
“All expenses, from prizes to field preparations and facilities, are fully covered by Sarga.co. We want to prove that horse racing traditions can thrive without burdening public funds,” Mardion explained on Thursday (Sept 25).
The organizers also allocated a Rp12.5 million contribution to two nagari hosting the event as part of their community support. Spectators can enjoy the race with a Rp10,000 ticket (less than USD 1), which also includes a complimentary mineral water.
Mardion, who also serves as a Payakumbuh City Council member for the 2024–2029 period, expressed hopes that the event would stimulate the local economy and strengthen the city’s tourism potential.
“This horse racing tradition is not just entertainment; it is an opportunity to develop local tourism and promote Payakumbuh as a center for equestrian sports,” he said.
The community has also welcomed the initiative. Atrimon, a local resident, noted that horse racing symbolizes unity and perseverance for the people.
“We are grateful to Sarga.co for their extraordinary sponsorship. Hopefully, this event will become an annual tradition, attract more visitors, and boost the local economy,” he remarked.
As part of the cultural heritage and traditional festival (alek) of Luak Limopuluah, the Indonesia Horse Racing Cup II 2025 is expected to deliver both thrilling competition and vibrant community spirit in Payakumbuh. (Rstp)
