Nusantaranews.net, Bukittinggi, West Sumatra – The City of Bukittinggi is welcoming delegates from around the world as it hosts the 4th International Minangkabau Literacy Festival (IMLF) 2026, an international gathering that coincides with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the iconic Jam Gadang.
Held from June 3 to 7, the festival brings together writers, academics, researchers, artists, cultural figures, and literacy advocates from dozens of countries. The event has transformed Bukittinggi into a vibrant center of international cultural exchange, highlighting the city's growing reputation as a destination for global dialogue, education, and heritage preservation.
As host, the Bukittinggi Municipal Government has taken a leading role in facilitating the festival and ensuring delegates experience the city’s unique blend of history, culture, and hospitality. The event serves as a platform for strengthening international cooperation while introducing the richness of Minangkabau traditions to a wider global audience.
The festival opened with a gala dinner attended by local leaders, international guests, and representatives from various organizations. The evening featured traditional cultural performances, providing delegates with an introduction to the artistic heritage and customs of the Minangkabau people.
Throughout the five-day event, participants are scheduled to take part in a series of activities, including international seminars, literary discussions, book launches, poetry readings, cultural exhibitions, and heritage tours. These programs are designed to encourage intellectual exchange while promoting literacy as a bridge between cultures and nations.
The hosting of IMLF 2026 is also closely linked to the centennial commemoration of Jam Gadang, one of Indonesia’s most recognized landmarks. For a century, the historic clock tower has stood as a symbol of Bukittinggi and the cultural identity of West Sumatra. By integrating the literacy festival with the anniversary celebration, organizers aim to connect historical heritage with contemporary discussions on education, culture, and sustainable development.
Beyond its cultural and educational significance, the festival is expected to generate positive economic benefits for the city. The arrival of hundreds of domestic and international participants has contributed to increased activity in the tourism sector, including hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and local creative industries.
The event also reflects Bukittinggi’s growing capability to host international-scale programs. By bringing together participants from diverse backgrounds and countries, the city is reinforcing its position as a gateway for cultural diplomacy and global engagement in Indonesia.
As the festival continues, Bukittinggi stands not only as the home of the legendary Jam Gadang but also as a meeting point where ideas, cultures, and friendships from around the world converge, strengthening mutual understanding and celebrating the enduring value of literacy in an increasingly interconnected world.
