Many people use the terms Skills vs Abilities interchangeably. However, few actually realize that there is a difference in the way the two terms are used. The biggest major problem in differentiating the two arises from the fact that the two terms refer to arbitrary things, that is, things that cannot be easily measured or differentiated. Hence, they also cannot be easily compared for the same reason. However, due to their similar nature, this is what causes most people to confuse skills and abilities for the same reason.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, Skill is the ability to do something well (expertise), while Ability is defined as having the means or skills to do something. As we can see, the two terms are related to each other, which is why definitions use them to define each other.

However, if the definition is simplified, it highlights a big difference between the two terms. Ability refers to the power to try to to something, which implies if someone can do something, they need the flexibility to try and do it. Alternately, a Skill is having the ability to try to to something well. Therefore, it may be said that if you'll be able to get laid, it's a capability, but if you're good at it, or are able to move, then you almost certainly have the abilities to try and do it.

Let's consider a few examples, which may be easier to explain. Most people know how to run, that is they have the knowledge of what it takes to run. Someone has to design something, something or a product. Today, most people have the ability to design. They can design, maybe not very good for a work, but for all intents and purposes, they can design. However, this still does not ensure that they have the skills needed to become a designer or professional designer. Therefore, it can be said that ability is being able to do something, but skills are needed to do it well.

In conclusion, the difference between the two is that the undeniable fact that Abilities are considered natural or innate, whereas Skills are behaviors that are learned or acquired. Basically, this implies that while someone may have the power to try and do something, they'll not hump well. But by studying and practicing, they'll develop the abilities they have.
